Dearest:

The photos of Malia are darling. In the one from the front I found she has the same elephant fold on her nose that Ann had when she was born! Fr. Lochner arrived yesterday. He leaves for a week in Hawaii, then returns to study at the E.W. Center. Funny after having known him as vice-President of Notre Dame or about, but then he wanted so badly to come to Hawaii.

We took him out to dinner. Then he said we should go to Duke Kahanamoku, where he knew the head-waiter, I think an ex-student. So we went. The fellow is one of those dressed tropical with a little round cap. His is red and the waiter's black. We were put at the best table. Fr. gave a recipee for a drink he has invented and the bar tender made it special. The entertainment was sustained and louder yet than anything I had suffered from. People with good voices singing full blast into the microphone. Ed Kenny was the main singer. Came to our table after the show. Said that Hawaiians like my way of painting Hawaiians, even though Madge Tennent has it all wrong. Said he had a grandmother that looked like a Charlot. Headwaiter said when his turn was up, he'd take us to Trader Vic, where Fr. also knew people! Refused payment on the drinks. It sure pays to know a head waiter. I had had it, so let Fr. go, shepherded by headwaiter and chaperoned by Martin. This morning Martin said Trader Vic manager sat at their table, etc... For a tourist Fr. surely goes places!

Shipleys: I had let Sue West deal with them. I knew Shipley was reluctant to pay the whole month, and didn't want to interfere. This morning, West said that she had agreed to a week paid extra instead of a month, keeping the 'repair money' also, until you come back and see things. I am glad it is settled, whichever way. So I can phone them and go see them and the house. I don't want them to be unhappy and think the inponderables are more important.

Ala Moana Shopping opens at night three times a week. Was there looking at books Monday, then asked Joan Gima to take me home. Gave her coffee and pie in Wakiki. We talked of Martin's show. They expect to give it in September. It would be better with the same name if our subject matter was not also the same. He has yaqona ceremonies, offering tabuas, etc.. It will be hard for people to realize he knows more about it than I do, which he does. I passed all my stay there facing a wall, turning my back on all that!

New fashion, short mumus with printed on them a nude body, actual size, in a very very skimpy bikini. It seems to be selling very well. Girls with it on Kalakaua. Sort of raw.

Enclosed Peter's grades and opinions. I think we should be very grateful he made it. Teachers (and Peter) speak of his intense effort, and there is in him a glow of achievement. I believe it is so, even if it does not come out very clearly on paper.

Marriage Joan Vine. I don't know if it is on the rebound, or simply that she had forgotten Roy. Most probably the latter.

We are between semesters on campus, which makes things very quiet. I work in my office, which is the only place where I can work, now that we are three in a room. If September had been the date for the house, I was ready to get a U. appartment, where we would have been more at ease, but those are rented by the month.

Strike of newspapers in the offing. Now that I am a newspaperman (reviewing shows) it affects me too. I have two reviews in the mail that may not be published. Get 12.50 per review, which comes handy for groceries, or rather restaurants.

Much Love. XXX [signed: Jean]
